How do closed circuit cooling towers work?
Closed-circuit cooling towers make it possible to separate the evaporative circuit from the process circuit (customer circuit). A stainless-steel plate heat exchanger attached to the cooling tower, in its dedicated room, allows a glycol-free operation, and a simplified and unequalled ease of maintenance.
The operating principle of closed circuit cooling towers is as follows:
On the process side to be cooled (customer circuit), the water to be cooled enters the plate heat exchanger attached to the tower and exits cooled. The primary circuit is closed and is in no way in contact with the air.
On the secondary side of the cooling tower, water is sucked from the basin by a pump, then circulates through the stainless-steel plate heat exchanger. The water, leaving the exchanger, is brought to the top of the unit by a pipe. This water is fractionated and evenly dispersed over the exchange surfaces by dispersers (also called water distribution nozzles). The air driven by the fan (axial or centrifugal) enters through the lower part of the cooling tower and escapes through the upper part after being heated and saturated with water, passing between the exchange surfaces.
Under the action of the surface tension due to the ladders of the infill, the water spreads out uniformly, and runs off over the entire height of the tower. The exchange surface is thus increased.
The water, cooled by forced ventilation, falls in free fall into the inclined basin located at the bottom of the unit.
What is a plate heat exchanger room?
The plate heat exchanger room, made of galvanized steel, is directly integrated into the cooling tower. It contains :
- The plate heat exchanger which is protected from the weather and does not require antifreeze protection. The circuit drains by gravity in the event of an electrical shutdown;
- The exchanger pump which is protected from freezing by a patented thermostatic valve;
- Pressure meters fixed on the pipes upstream and downstream of the pump and upstream of the distribution;
- The centrifugal filter positioned at the outlet of the basin, filtering 100% of the volume of the tower.
